History, Mission & Values

OUR HISTORY

Access Rehab Centers was formed in 1998 as an LLC joint venture between Waterbury Hospital and Easter Seals of Greater Waterbury.

By combining Waterbury Hospital’s then-existing program in treating the more-traditional type patients with the expertise of Easter Seals in treating pediatric and high need individuals the resulting mix of clinicians were able to provide care to any age group, with a wide variety of clinical specialties, and the company could accept almost any insurance.

The company opened its doors with three Waterbury-based clinics.

Early on, the company made a clear decision to invest heavily in quality and to provide the absolute best possible service to all its patients. Access Rehab Centers invested in developing the levels of services and supports that allowed it to successfully undergo a rigorous accreditation survey process through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), the Rehabilitation Communities version of a “Good House Keeping Seal of Approval.”

CARF accreditation signifies that the facility provides extremely high quality services as well as a high level of support to its patients. Such quality and support requirements include having available social workers, access to psychologists, sign language interpreters, language and translation services and documented handicapped accessibility. CARF requirements also include having rigorous quality measures, elevated supports for patients with high needs, community outreach programs, sensitivity to the needs of various cultures, as well as numerous other quality investments other providers are unable to provide.

As a result of this emphasis on quality and high level patient support Access Rehab Centers has grown dramatically: in the number of patient being seen, the number of physicians referring their patients, and the number of clinics located throughout the Greater Waterbury area. Early on the company also began offering contract services, including management of other rehabilitation programs and contract staffing.

Today, Access Rehab Centers boasts 13 outpatient clinics, management of a large hospital inpatient rehabilitation facility, management and staffing of a large therapy contract with an urban school system, staffing services to other school systems throughout the state, and more.
